Gout Sufferers

Although Gout is considered a form of arthritis it doesn’t cause pain throughout the body like other arthritis does. With Gout, the body produces an over excessive amount of uric acid which forms crystals in the joint causing painful joint inflammation.

Gout can affect other joints but typically attacks the large joint of the big toe. When gout flares up it can cause excruciating pain. During a full Gout flare up, massage is not advisable. Instead try soaking the joint in a mixture of Epsom Salt and rock salt with an essential oil added for relief.

Rosemary, Frankincense, Peppermint, Turmeric, Thyme, Ginger, Birch, Fennel, Chamomile, Basil, Lemon, Cypress and/or Lavender, are all good essential oils to use for gout, so pick your favorite to try.

Most gout sufferers find relief through massage therapy when not in an acute flare up because massage moves the uric acid away from the affected joint. Lymphatic massage and/or reflexology can assist in the information, pain and flush the body of excess uric acid providing relief for the gout sufferer.

Other natural ways to help lower uric acid in the body and prevent flare ups are avoiding sugary foods and beverages, alcohol, adding more fiber in your diet and drinking more water.

Gout can cause serious health problems if left unattended. Let your massage therapist know you have gout and especially when you’re in an acute flare up so they can avoid the area until it calms down.
