Hatha Yoga

“Pure Balance”

Yoga originated from India and is one of six orthodox schools of Hindu philosophical traditions. In the original language of Sanskrit, Yoga means Union. This ancient language is used during most Yoga classes to describe poses and postures. Yoga is adaptable and can be used as a spiritual discipline, religion or practiced separately for its health benefits.

By incorporating breathing exercises, meditation, and poses, Yoga promotes and encourages relaxation and stress reduction for the body. The ancient practice works with both the physical and psychic to create harmony with the body, mind, and environment.

Hatha Yoga symbolizes the connection of the Sun and Moon. Bringing the world and the physical body into balance and harmony. There are many forms of Yoga but here, in the United States, most styles of Yoga are bases in the Hatha Yoga Style.

Learning the 8 limbs of Yoga are helpful as your Yoga practice grows. They are:

  • Yama – attitude towards environment.
  • Niyama – attitude towards ourselves.
  • Asana – physical postures.
  • Pranayama – restraint or expansion of the breath.
  • Pratyahara – withdraw of the senses.
  • Dharana – concentration.
  • Dhyana – meditation.
  • Samadhi – complete integration.

Other common things heard around Yoga is the term “Namaste”, meaning “I honor you” or “The divine in me, sees the divine in you”. This is often used at the end of a Yoga class with hands together at heart center.

Another well-known term is Chakra, meaning “wheel”. The chakras are energetic centers in the body’s energy system, running from the base of the spine to the top of the head. To help keep balance in our bodies and life, the “wheels” needs to rotate and run smoothly, in perfect rhythm with each other. When combined together, it is designed to create the perfect harmony within everything.

Healing Feather Wellness Hatha Yoga classes provide “Social Yoga”, making our classes unique! Our students enjoy the company of each other as a whole, while practicing yoga together and building a community together. This openness is created for any questions that may arise during our class, but we still have our quiet time too. We work on stretching muscles, lengthening our body, improving balance, increasing strength and lowering stress, all while we have fun as a group. Our classes are designed to promote wellness, mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually, through laughter, happiness, friendships, and fulfillment. Each of our classes creates a positive experience with the understanding that yoga is a practice, not perfection, as our growth is. • What do I need to begin Yoga? There really isn’t much you’ll need to start but here are some things to get you going.
    • Yoga Mat (or a large towel can work at first).
    • Bottle of water.
    • Comfortable Clothing. (something you can move in).
    • A Towel.
    • Your body and clean bare feet.
    • (You may require other things as you continue to practice).
  • When is the best time to practice Yoga? The optimal time to practice is in the morning before breakfast or in the evening around sunset. Although practicing anytime is better than not practicing at all.
  • Do I need to be flexible to practice Yoga? No, Yoga will help you increase your flexibility the more you practice.
  • How is Yoga different from other workouts? Yoga is connecting the body, mind, and breathe through different postures to direct our attention inward. Other workouts can store toxins in the body’s muscles while Yoga stretches the muscles and releases the toxins out of the body. Yoga strengthens and provides more flexibility for the body.
  • Do I have to meditate when practicing Yoga? That is totally up to you. Some Yoga classes incorporate meditations and others do not. Ask the instructor before class begins.
  • Can I eat before I practice Yoga? It is best to allow the digestion process to finish before practicing Yoga for energy reasons. Because of this it is best to practice Yoga on an empty stomach or at least one to two hours after eating.
  • Do I have to wear Yoga pant? Of course not. It is advisable to wear lose clothing that is easy and comfortable to move and bend in.
  • How do I find a good Yoga teacher? This is important, especially if you are just starting out. A good Yoga teacher is trained and will make safety a priority in their class. Ask family and friends who practice yoga. Word of mouth is always a good starting place. Just make sure you are comfortable with the Yoga teacher you choose.
  • Can I practice Yoga if I’m overweight? Yes, of course. You can practice Yoga at any weight, size, height, and fitness level. Yoga teachers can help accommodate and modify poses for different body types and shapes.
  • Can I do Yoga while I’m pregnant? It is recommended not to start Yoga during the first trimester of pregnancy because of all the changes occurring in the body. If you are pregnant you should consult with your doctor or healthcare professional before starting any Yoga practice. With your doctor’s approval to practice Yoga, you should work with a Yoga teacher knowledgeable with pregnancy Yoga, as there are some poses not recommended for mother’s to be.
