Reclaim your balance!

As a person ages, their body tends to lose its stability, balance, and flexibility. This isn’t anything new but it is something that can be improved.

All of my students have had different difficulties ranging from stiffness with no flexibility to having no balance at all. Each of them has improved since they’ve begun doing yoga. That’s correct, yoga classes!

Yoga is a gentle form of exercise that not only strengthens the body and muscles but promotes flexibility, balance, endurance and so much more. In fact, yoga has such a positive impact on the human’s body that doctors and specialists are recommending it to their patients all over.

Now most people envision yoga as tying themselves into a human pretzel knot or standing on their heads. Which probably sounded fun as a child but not so much nowadays.

Well, you can do those things in a yoga practice if you like but luckily, it’s not required in order to practice yoga.

Yoga is more, a lot more. It’s the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual sides of oneself, coming together in perfect harmony, without judgment or ego. It’s the here and now of just being.

The best part about yoga is that it’s a practice. Meaning everyone can make their own individual practice and take it as far as they wish. Every day will be different. Some days you’ll be able to do a pose perfectly and feel as though you could hold it forever. Then other days, you might not even be able to get into the pose at all. Guess what? That’s normal.

Yoga is a practice of listening to your body. Your body will tell you what it’s needing, if you take the time to listen. Which in itself, is a practice for learning.

It’s very important to do age-appropriate yoga. Let’s face it, as we age, we’re not going to be able to do the things a young twenty-year-old does in class unless we’ve been practicing it already for years. Any yoga is better than no yoga. So, get yourself up and moving.

Yoga is beneficial for circulation, self-esteem, balance, flexibility, inner growth, self-love and improved health all around. It lowers stress levels and releases toxins from the body through slow motion, stretching, and different poses. All while promoting better sleep and improving focus and concentration. Now who doesn’t need any of those things?!

You can find a yoga class by simply asking your friends and family members where they go.  You can also search the internet for yoga near you. Although, right now, you’ll find most yoga classes are either closed temporarily or being done online because of the social distancing and requirements placed on us by the pandemic from last year. Safety is important and should be taken seriously by all yoga instructors.

Here, we use zoom to teach our yoga classes virtually online. It’s not the same as in person although our students are still happy to just have classes. You can find yoga all over though, you can even order DVD’s, to use on your own. It’s totally up to you and what you want. It’s your practice to improve your body and health.

Thinking of improvement in this new year must include your health! So, get on your mat.
