Relief for Arthritis

There are many different types of arthritis. The most commonly heard of is Osteoarthritis (OA), and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) but all the different types of arthritis causes pain in one way or another.

Arthritis can cause debilitating pain and even deformities if uncontrolled causing limited life activities and affecting the persons work.

Osteoarthritis is when the protective cartilage breaks down inside the joint making movements difficult and painful. Over time, the bones may begin to rub directly against each other causing even more pain.

Rheumatoid Artists is an autoimmune arthritis that uses its own immune system to attack healthy tissue and other organs but it primarily goes after the lining of the joints, (known as Synovium/Synovial), leading to inflammation that can affect the whole body. Over time, the inflammation can break down the joint and cause permanent damage. RA pain can come from the joints, bones, and/or ligaments.

People suffering with arthritis can find significant relief from its pain through regular massage of the muscles and joints. Massage reduces pain, stress and anxiety levels in people with arthritis by lowering the hormone cortisol, and boosting the serotonin level in the body. Massage can also lower the production of the neurotransmitters often linked with pain providing better sleep and improved moods.

Regular massages for arthritis can provide improvement of the pain and stiffness along with the improvement of one’s range of motion, their hand grip strength and the overall function of their joints making it easier to enjoy the daily activities of life again.

There are many different types of massages available but here are a few that may help; Swedish – using long strokes, circular movements and kneading to loosen tight muscles. Lymphatic – (aka: Lymphatic drainage) using light, patterned strokes to help move lymphatic fluid and drain.  Petrissage – using kneading techniques to loosen and lengthen tissue connected to the muscles.
