Sciatica Pain:
Sciatica typically effects only one side of the lower body at a time, extending from the lower back through the hip, buttocks and down the leg. Approximately 4 out of 10 people will have irritation of the sciatic nerve during some point in their life. Up to 90% of people recover from sciatica issues without needing any type of surgery.
Symptoms of the Sciatica varies greatly but are commonly known as feeling pain, like a mild ache, a sharp or burning sensation, a tingling down the leg, hip pain, weakness, numbness, difficulty moving the leg, shooting pain that makes it hard to stand up, and/or constant pain in the buttocks. It’s basically an extreme discomfort.
The Sciatic is a large nerve that runs from the lower spine in the back through the pelvis and buttocks, down the back of each leg. When an injury occurs or there is pressure put on the sciatic nerve, it causes the pain mentioned above. This pain may increase with prolonged sitting, standing, lifting or straining. Treatment for the Sciatica can range from hot and cold packs, medication, exercise and other therapies.
Some causes of Sciatica can be a spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal) in the lower back, Degenerative disc disease, irritation of either the lower lumbar or lumbosacral spine, Spondylolisthesis, muscle spasms, herniated disc’s, pregnancy, and/or people who suffer from arthritis, overweight, or don’t work out.
As the Sciatica is healing, try to remain active. Motion can help reduce inflammation and pain. Although massage therapy is commonly overlooked, it’s a good treatment for sciatica pain. Massage therapy loosens the tight muscles, helping relieve the pinching and irritation of the nerve. Massage also releases pain fighting endorphins, providing temporary relief from the pain and promotes blood circulation to the inflamed areas.
There are different options for sciatica pain and knowing what’s available helps on deciding your choice of treatment.
